What's Lucy Up To?

Lucy is quite the busy bee these days. Her hand eye coordination is growing immensely. I'm going to share a few of her favorite works at 12 months.

These big knobbed puzzles from Melissa & Doug are perfect for those little grasping hands.  If I'm sitting with Lucy as she's doing this work I make sure to name each puzzle piece. It's so important that we give our child as much language as possible. Their little mind is like a sponge soaking up all the information that they are taking in from their environment.
Lucy has moved from the first object permanence box to this one with a drawer.  Each time she drops the ball in and opens the drawer she looks up at me and smiles. It's as if she knew it was going to be in there all along. Like "I told ya, mom!" So cute!

Lucy enjoys this Imbucare Peg box. She mainly takes the pegs out and ever so often puts them back in a hole. The more she does this work the better she'll become at it. This work is full of all kinds of learning experiences such as hand eye coordination, knowledge of primary colors, order, concentration, and independence.

Imbucare Box with knitted ball. This is another work for Lucy to explore object permanence.  I try my best to remember as she puts the ball in the hole to say "in" and when she opens the drawer to say "open" and when she takes the ball out to say "out."

This infant coin box is a little more difficult and takes a lot of hand eye coordination to make the coins fit the slit. Lucy is still working to make the coin fit the slit but enjoys taking the coins in and out of the drawer for now. Remember a child is still exploring and taking information in even if they are not using a work for its intended purpose. (Only take a work away if the child is being destructive or will harm themselves.)

I'm sorry this photo is blurry but it's the only still picture I had on my phone of Lucy using her Radio Flyer Walker Wagon. She hasn't taken but just a few steps on her own without holding on to anything. I have a feeling it'll be any day now. This little wagon allows them something to hold on to while giving them mobility.

I was going through some old photos and found a few pictures of works Ava was doing around Lucy's age or maybe a few months older. Thought I'd share. :)
This is a picture I found of Ava after she completed her circle puzzle for the first time. Why do they have to grow up so fast??

This was my version of a coin box. I used a tupperware container and poker chips.

Shape cube. I simplified it at first where she would just find the shapes  in the lid. Later on she was able to get the hang of all the holes and shapes.

So simple...2 bowls a measuring cup and some pom poms. This is Ava practicing scooping.

  1. I'm drooling over Lucy's toys, haha! I love them! This post is full of such wonderful, useful information. I loved getting to see Ava play with some of the same works. You are such an awesome momma to those sweet girls!
